Bigsby Fixed-Arm Model B-6 Vibrato Tailpiece (1953)An interesting and historical musical device. Bigsby Fixed-Arm Model B-6 Model Vibrato Tailpiece (1953), made in Downey, CA, natural aluminum finish, cast aluminum.
Here is a rare and very early example of the most successful add-on guitar accessory of all time: The Bigsby True Vibrato tailpiece. This unit dates to shortly after P.A. Bigsby received his patent for the device in 1953; the spot where the second half of "PATENT PEND." was cast into the metal has been ground off and the patent number somewhat crudely stamped in. This virtually hand made Bigsby also has many detail differences from later units.
The strings feed through the pivot bar instead of attaching to pins; each major component has a number from 1-5 stamped on the underside and the means of securing the arm and pivot bar are different from the familiar production models. The original cast rocker aluminum bridgeis included which works on a totally different system from later 1950's pieces: in this case the posts are set in cups in the base and are the pivot point-later bridges use fixed posts and a round-bottom saddle. Interestingly, the later 1950's-60's Gretsch/Chet Atkins series bridges use this system. This unit is complete, functional and ready for installation, or suitable for display as-is. A wonderful piece of early southern California guitar Mojo, and a historically significant piece of Bigsby esoterica! Overall length is 15 1/2 in. (39.4 cm.), 4 in. (10.2 cm.) width. All original and unmodifed; some general wear mostly to the painted areas. Excellent Condition. Item # 4270 This item has been sold.
