Acme Professional Model 5 String Banjo, made by S. S. Stewart, c. 1897, made in Philadelphia, PA, natural varnish finish, spunover rim, cherrywood neck with ebony fingerboard, black tolex hard shell case.

Built By S.S. Stewart for sale by Sears, Roebuck & Co this is a fancy example of the “Catalog” instruments sold all over the US around 1900. A good representative and typical end-of-the 19th Century banjo.
 
Overall length is 36 1/2 in. (92.7 cm.), 11 in. (27.9 cm.) diameter head, and 2 1/8 in. (5.4 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 27 in. (686 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1/4 in. (32 mm.). Excellent overall; set up with a remo plastic head and steel strings. All hardware appears original except more recent 5th string tuner. Tailpiece is a period elite. Hoop has some notch damage from random hook placements over the years and there is light play wear but overall this is a nicely preserved and good playing 19th Century banjo. Comes with a deluxe modern "bump" case. Excellent Condition.
