C. F. Martin 0-17 Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1935)
C. F. Martin 0-17 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1935), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 61509, natural lacquer finish, mahogany body and neck, Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, black tolex hard shell case.
This is a very attractive little mahogany Martin from 1935. During the depression these inexpensive (for a Martin!) guitars sold for all of thirty dollars, which sounds laughable now but at the time was still a considerable sum for the average player. This model absolutely helped Martin stay afloat in the lean years of the early '30'! 1935 was a big production year for the 0-17 with over 900 sold but not many have survived in this sort of condition. This familiar 14 fret model was still a fairly new design as the model had just been changed over from a 12-fret instrument in time for the 1934 catalog. The unbound rosewood fingerboard is fretted with the then-new tang frets which had just replaced the traditional bar frets. This 0-17 is a simple but beautiful sounding pre-war Martin, with a well defined tone especially fine for fingerpicking.
Overall length is 38 1/2 in. (97.8 cm.), 13 1/2 in. (34.3 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/4 in. (10.8 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 7/8 in. (632 mm.). Very nice overall, with just some average light finish wear overall; scratches and dings mostly but not much play wear. This is more prominent on the back than anywhere else; the top is actually quite clean. There are no cracks to the top or back (pretty unusual for a mahogany Martin of this vintage) but there is an old repair to the tailblock, in the typical spot around the endpin. This is fairly minor and does not affect the instrument in any practical way. No other notable repairs, and the guitar does not appear to have been played extensively. This is a very fine playing and sounding instrument, one of the nicest pre-war mahogany Martins we have had in some time. Includes a modern HSC. Overall Excellent Condition.
