Anthony Baines. "European & American Musical Instruments". Catalogue hardcover (1966)
"European & American Musical Instruments" by Anthony Baines, published by The Viking Press, hardcover (1966), New York.
The publisher says, "A 'pictorial museum' is Anthony Baines' description of this beautiful book. There are upwards of 830 photographs, all of them exactly captioned and identified -- a representative range of the non-keyboard instruments of the western world during the four and a half centuries roughly from 1450 to 1900. With the help of these pictures the musician, collector, museum curator, or dealer will be able to identify and date many unfamiliar instruments.
"Although regional folk instruments are not excluded, the main emphasis has naturally been on the products of professional town workshops. The classic models of successive periods are given most prominince, but space has also been found for unusual and even unique specimens.
While the most immediately striking feature of the book is its pictures, the introductory text provides an invaluable summary of musical history from the highly significant instrumental point of view. The references in it to recent research (as published, for example, in the Galpin Society Journal) will be new to all but a limited circle of specialized musicologists. The extensive bibliographies are equally useful."
